The Differences Between Extrinsic And Intrinsic Religious...

1. As found in the Livingston text the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic religious expressions is as follows, extrinsic is the people who find religion to be useful and can provide things like social status while intrinsic is people who use religion for themselves rather than an external reward such has social status. James’ is more interested in the self-surrender type of conversion. Extrinsic and intrinsic religious expression is related to James’s notion of conversion because James believes God is found in more inner personal experiences making it intrinsic. 2. Marx: religious suffering, â€Å"opium of the people†, â€Å"the heart of a heartless world,† Religion is a necessity for the poor to cope day to day, also believed Religion was used to control people. Religion is an evil that existed in society. Nietzsche: God is dead. The god that humans created to serve sociological or psychological purposes is no longer needed, mankind and society have evolved into a new, scientific era and so the god who ruled the past is no longer necessary, hence dead. Hates religion. Believes man created God. Both Nietzsche and Marx agree that man created God for their own purpose to essentially make themselves feel better about themselves. Nietzsche says that once the purpose of God was fulfilled the people discarded him and that was the end of it. Marx argues religion continues to be used in order for society to function properly day to day.
